Fischmarkt
From the Domplatz, Marktstraße leads to the Fischmarkt (Fish Market) with its Neo-Gothic Rathaus (Town Hall). The early 14th-century Heiligengeistkirche (Holy Ghost Church) is on the way. Interestingly, it has a triangular shape that follows the lay of the land. From the church, look down Große Arche road to see the lovely yellow Baroque façade of the Haus zum Sonnenborn, Große Arche 6. It is used as a wedding registry and not open to the general public.
In addition to the Rathaus, there are several imposing facades on the Fischmarkt, including the lovely Renaissance Zum breiten Herd (1584) and the Zum roten Ochsen (1562). On the square is a statue of St Martin, Germany’s patron saint, oddly dressed as a Roman soldier.
Nearby is the Predigerkirche, at Predigerstraße 4, erected between 1270 and 1400 by the Order of the Mendicant Friars. In summer, it has organ concerts on most Wednesday afternoons.
Across the stream is the Barfüßerkirche, at Barfüßerstraße 20. It was left in ruins after World War II but the choir is a small museum of medieval art.
