Kamp-Bornhofen & the Enemy Brothers Castles
Kamp-Bornhofen is a small village on the right bank of the river Rhine, lying between St Goar and Boppard. But shortly before Kamp Bornhofen, and in fact overlooking the village, are two medieval castles of supreme interest: Burg Liebenstein (06773-308) and Burg Sterrenberg (06773-323). Together, these are known as the "Enemy Brothers’ Castles" (Feindlichen Brüder Schlösser). Here, a wall was built between the two to ostensibly improve defenses. But according to legend, there's another side to it: the two brothers had a feud and erected the wall, since they couldn't bear the sight of one another. One version has it that one brother betrayed their sister; yet another, the more popular of the two, weaves a tale of a beautiful lady and an inevitable love-triangle. In any event, both castles have cafés and superb all-round views.
