Frankfurt' Westend
Frankfurt's Westend is to the west of the Alte Oper and the traditional area of bankers and diplomats. It has some of the most expensive residential property in Germany. It also has two sights worth seeing. Both are easiest to reach on foot from U-Bahn station Bockenheimer Warte.
The Palmengarten (Palm/Tropical Gardens), Siesmayerstraße 43, is a huge park and botanical garden. It has the oldest botanical building in Europe – the 1869 Palm House. And then there are the more modern glass and steel houses that have plants from different climate zones. Whatever the season, there always seem to be flowers blooming in the garden. The Goethe Garden, with famous sayings by the poet, recently opened inside the park. A large children’s play area and open-air theater provides entertainment for all ages.
Nearby is the Naturmuseum Senckenberg (Natural History Museum), Senckenberganlage 25. It is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and has an important paleontology collection. However, the fossils and rocks are upstaged by the dinosaur displays. The museum is hugely popular with children and many displays are interactive.
