A Brief History of Huangshan
The modern regional hub, Tunxi, with 150,000 residents, is located at the confluence of two rivers. It has a long history as a trading town and today retains some of the traditional Huizhou architecture for which the region is famous. The historical heart of this part of Anhui lies halfway between Tunxi and Huangshan at Shexian (formerly known as Huizhou). Both Shexian and Yixian were prosperous as salt trading towns during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and the surrounding villages still hold many examples of their traditional architecture. The beautiful houses constructed by wealthy merchants were so well-designed that they set the standard throughout central China, while the memorial arches (paifang) they built illustrate the social values of the time.
Huangshan was named in honor of the great Emperor Huangdi and has long been revered as one of China’s most bewitching sights. The mountain’s steep slopes have been trodden by both emperors and party leaders and were also sought out by Chan Buddhist recluses. Painters have long been captivated by Huangshan’s mystical beauty and if you get a sense of déjà vu, you’ve probably seen an artistic impression of the mountain before. The mountain continues to draw eager visitors and Huangshan’s presence on the must-see tourist circuit allows the region some wealth in otherwise poor Anhui province.
