Algur H. Meadows was an art collector and patron of education and the arts. While inSpain on business in the 1950s, Meadows was introduced to Spanish art and quickly became an avid collector. In 1962, Meadows donated his collection of Spanish paintings to Southern Methodist University (SMU) and provided funding for its housing. The museum opened to the public in 1965. Until his death in 1978, Meadows continued to work with the museum in building the finest encyclopedic collection of Spanish art outside of Spain. In addition to the museum, Meadows donated an important group of monumental sculptures by major twentieth century artists. These are placed in the Elizabeth Meadows Sculpture Garden in front of the Owen Art Center, in which the Meadows Museum is situated.
