Located in the southwest corner of the island, nearly 8 miles from Lanai City, and reached by way of Manele Rd. (440) south from Lanai City some 4 miles, then westward onto Kaupili Rd., a rugged dirt road, another 2½ miles, from where the wild Kaunolu Rd. dashes off toward the ocean, another 3 miles or so—making a sharp left just three-quarter mile from the Kaupili Rd. turnoff and a sharp right a quarter mile farther—along an especially bumpy descent, to Kaunolu. Kaunolu itself is the site of an ancient fishing village, which was once the favorite vacation retreat of Kamehameha I and which still has in it the sites of some 86 houses and 35 shelters—one of the best preserved ruins in the Hawaiian islands. There is also a large heiau here, the Halulu Heiau, together with some petroglyphs, and Kahekili’s Leap, with its sheer, 90-foot drop to the ocean below.
