Charles Krug is the oldest operating winery in the Napa Valley, originally founded in 1861 by German immigrant Charles Krug, who was the first in the valley to make wine using a grape press rather than the traditional method of stomping by foot. Krug ran the winery until the 1890s, after which it changed hands several times, until in 1943 it was finally acquired by the Peter Mondavi family, present owners. The winery offers a complete line of varietal and generic wines under the Charles Krug label, mostly from grapes grown in from its 800 acres of prime Napa Valley vineyards, as well as jug wines under a second label, C.K. Mondavi. Gift and wine shop on premises. Tours, tasting and sales, daily 10.30am-5pm; last tour at 4.00pm.
