Beringer is Napa Valley’s oldest winery in continuous operation, originally founded in 1876 by Jacob and Frederich Beringer, and which, during Prohibition, remained open, selling sacramental wine to the Church. Frederich Beringer’s majestic 19th-century mansion, the Rhine House, is now a visitor center; besides which, the winery also features 1,000 feet or so of ancient tunnels and ageing caves, dug into the hillside by hand in the 1880s. The winery produces a full range of varietal wines, primarily from its 1,400 acres of vineyards in the Napa and Knights valleys. Some proprietary and reserve wines and small lots of dessert wines are also bottled under the Beringer label, and generic and jug wines are bottled under a secondary label, Los Hermanos. Beringer is now owned by the Swiss multinational, Nestlé. Open daily 10-5; summer hours: 10am-6pm. Tasting and tours, 10am-4pm; cost: $5.00-$30.00.
