This is one of the largest aquariums in the country, and the chief attraction of Monterey, visited by an estimated 3 million tourists each year. The aquarium features a variety of superb marine exhibits, including a 90-foot-long recreation of a cross-section of Monterey Bay; a giant, three-story kelp forest, believed to be the tallest aquarium exhibit in the United States, rising three full stories and containing 350,000 gallons of sea water; the spectacular Outer Bay galleries, which features a million-gallon indoor ocean, viewed through the world’s largest window; and the Marine Mammal Gallery, which has life-sized displays of whales and other marine mammals. There are also tide pools and touch pools for children, a large Shorebird Aviary, and a delightful two-level sea otter exhibit where visitors can watch playful sea otters dive, swim and sun themselves. The aquarium also has vast decks with panoramic views of Monterey Bay; and gift and book shops on the premises. Aquarium admission fee: $21.95 adults, $19.95 seniors and students, $12.95 children (3-12 years). Open daily 10am-6pm (9.30am-6pm during summer months and major holiday periods); closed Christmas Day.
