Historic, mile-long street, immortalized by John Steinbeck in his book of the same name, Cannery Row. The “row,” which stretches from the Coast Guard Station in the east to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in the west, running along the bay, is lined with colorful old sardine canneries. During the early 1900s, there were some 19 canneries situated along here, processing in excess of 235,000 tons of sardines annually. Most of the canneries closed in 1951, and several were destroyed by fire in the following years. The surviving canneries are now being restored and converted into fashionable little arcades, featuring fine shops and boutiques, restaurants and art galleries.
