The George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center housed in the former Carver High School site archives the rich cultural heritage and experiences of the early pioneers who made significant impact on the development of the African-American community, the community’s era of segregation. Along with showcasing the talent of emerging youth artists, local, regional and renowned visual and performing artists. Phoenix Union Colored High /Carver High School building was built in 1926 and is one of the few remaining structures in Phoenix built exclusively for African Americans during the period of enforced segregation from 1913 – 1954. The Phoenix Monarchs Alumni Association of Arizona in 1986 incorporated itself as a non-profit organization with the purpose of creating a community and cultural center. In 1996, the Phoenix Monarchs Alumni Association purchased the building and surrounding property from the Phoenix Union High School District, with the condition placed that the property must be utilized as a community and cultural center.
