When Gene, just south of Örnsköldsvik, was discovered by accident in the mid-1970s it baffled scientists and historians all over the country. The items found could be dated back to the early Iron Age and, according to what they thought they knew, there was no evidence of people living in this area at that time. History books were rewritten and Örnsköldsvikhad a new attraction. After the archaeologists had had their fun with 15 years of digging, the village was reconstructed according to what they thought it looked like in the sixth centuryand an open-air museum was created. Visitors get toexperience hands-on what it was like to live in those days by trying the old techniques of baking, craftsmanship and archery. Open daily in the summer from late June to early August with guided tours, exhibitions and other activities offered.
