In the mid-14th century, Pietro Alighieri, son of the famed poet Dante, purchased the Casal dei Ronchi, an estate in Gargagnago where his father spent time in exile writing the Paradiso section of his Divina Commedia. Today, more than 600 years later, the estate still remains in the hands of the legendary poet’s descendants who have carried forward the long tradition of viniculture and agriculture, producing wine, jam, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey and liquor with the help of the distributor Masi. Located on the estate’s grounds is the La Foresteria residence. The eight apartments are spacious and equipped with kitchenettes and modern amenities, although some guests may find the rooms on the dark side. The residence also includes a cantina and tastings rooms as well as a kitchen where cooking classes are held upon request. The wine cellar and shop are open to the public daily from 10 am-6 pm except for Sunday. Their off-season rates are more reasonable.
