Construction on this medieval fortification likely began in the early 13th century, but it wasn’t until the 14th century under Scaligeri rule that the 16-km Serraglio defense walls were added, leading from Villafranca’s castle to those at Nogarole Rocca and Valeggio sul Mincio. Although only sections of this wall still remain today, Villafranca’s castle itself is in good condition and is occasionally used during summer for concerts and outdoor cinema events. The Museo del Risorgimento (Sat, 4-6 pm, Sunday, 3-6:30 pm) is in the castle and contains relics from the Italian wars of independence, including sabres, helmets and weaponry. It is possible to visit the castle’s tower on Sunday.
