Once the gardens of the 17th-century Villa Maffei (designed by a student of Palladio) that served as Napoleon III’s headquarters in 1859, the Parco Giardino Sigurtà is just south of Lake Garda and can be explored on foot, by a mini-train that travels the seven-km “Magic Route,” by bicycle or by golf cart (all for an additional fee). The expansive park features two itineraries (the red and the yellow) that wind through the park’s water gardens, tropical fish ponds, herb gardens, box-trees, statues and olive trees. Its pretty grounds make for a peaceful afternoon out, and there are several bars and picnic areas where you can enjoy lunch.
