Valdobbiadene (derived from Vallis Duplavis meaning Valley of the Piave) was invaded by German and Austrian troops during World War I and townspeople were evacuated due to the heavy bombing. After the war, cultivation of vineyards began to spread rapidly and, today, Valdobbiadene is the core of Prosecco production and among Italy’s most valuable wine towns.
