In early 2004 Alchimia opened its doors onto one of Europe’s largest squares, almost immediately becoming Padua’s new hot spot. But don’t be fooled by the size of the restaurant when you first enter. The wine bar gives way to another dining room, a courtyard with a few tables, and my absolute favorite, the lounge room. Kick back on a sofa in front of the fireplace with a cocktail in hand and enjoy the hip cosmopolitan atmosphere. The ambience, enhanced by artwork from local artists covering the walls (many are for sale), shouldn’t overshadow the food. Grapefruit is highlighted in several unusual antipasto dishes, including gamberetti, rucola e pompelmo rosa and speck e pompelmo. The penne prepared with a vegetable sauce is very good as well.
