This early 13th-century palace built as the seat of Padua’s parliament separates the Piazza della Frutta and Piazza delle Erbe, two lovely squares that host the daily fruit and vegetable market. Il Salone, the palazzo’s upper floor, is a massive hall with a vibrant cycle of 15th-century astrological and religious frescoes by Nicolò Miretto that replaced Giotto’s frescoes, destroyed in a 1420 fire. The wooden sculpture of a horse (a replica of the Gattamelata) was commissioned to be pulled in a public procession and later placed in the great hall that measures a vast 81 m long. Today, the ground floor of the palazzo is a covered market with many food shops.
