The Palazzo del Bo, named after an inn that once stood on this site called Il Bo, is the main seat of Italy’s second-oldest university, the University of Padua, founded in 1222. The guided tour is well-worth taking to see Galileo’s desk and pulpit where he taught from 1592-1610, as well as the world’s oldest anatomy theater (1594). Another famous 16th-century professor who taught at the university was Gabriele Fallopio, after whom the Fallopian tubes were named. The first female university graduate, Elena Lucrizia Cornaro Piscopia, received her degree from here in 1678, and her statue is in the courtyard. Don’t be surprised to see recent graduates who just received their laurea (degree) emerging from here and congregating outside in ridiculous costumes reciting peculiar verses. This is a rite of passage and tradition among university graduates, and you might enjoy being a spectator.
