Start your walk at the far south of town. The entrance to the historical center is marked here by the calm splendor of the Tempio di Santa Maria della Consolazione. This is one of the finest Renaissance creations of Cola di Matteuccio – and a rare example of Renaissance architecture in a town that is otherwise very much medieval in look and feel. Characterized by the five elegant and majestic domes that have crowned the building since around 1607, the door leads you into a majestic and luminous interior that houses a series of sculptures of the Apostles, culminating with the larger statue of Pope Martino I, added after the plague of 1630.
