In the 1960s, Umbrian wine production underwent something of a renaissance with modern systems of cultivation providing a new punch. One of those to benefit was the DOCG Montefalco Sagrantino, which has been cultivated in the area since a Franciscan monk first planted vines here in the Middle Ages. Sample the sweet dessert wines and the dry table wine, known for its bouquet of wild blackberry and its intense ruby red color. To visit local vineyards, contact the Consorzio de Tutela Vini DOC Montefalco.
