Return from here to Piazza del Mercato where this time you should take Via dell’Arco del Druso along to Arco di Druso e Germanico, the ceremonial arch that formed the entrance to the ancient Roman Forum (on which Piazza del Mercato now stands). Erected in the first century AD to honor Emperor Drusus and Germanicus from where it takes it name, the arch retains much of its original beauty and striking classical design, despite being hemmed in by more modern constructions. One of these is the Chiesa di SS Ansano e Isacco whose structure incorporates the remains of a first-century Roman temple. First consecrated here in 1143, the church has been much altered since its construction; the earliest part is in the crypt with its cross-vaulted ceiling, narrow aisles supported by columns lifted from earlier buildings, and 12th-century frescoes depicting the life of St Isaac, whose remains are here.
