Heading in the direction of Marina di Pisa, this Romanesque basilica is midway between Pisa and the coast. Although much of the façade shows signs of heavy flood damage, inside the Livornese tufa and black-and-white marble walls is a grandiose interior well worth the trip. Three naves are supported by 26 beautiful classical columns and the walls are covered with three levels of early 14th-century frescoes attributed to Lucchese painter Deodato Orlandi, which were only uncovered after restorations in 2000. The frescoes, depicting the stories of Saints Peter and Paul, give some insight into the church’s foundation: Apostle Peter is said to have landed here around 43 BC on his journey from Antioch to Rome.
