From a distance, Abbadia San Salvatore looks like a pretty modern town. You get yourself ready for the disappointment and then suddenly, as you reach the historical center, things change. For a start, you arrive at the abbey from where the town gets its name. Once the richest abbey in Tuscany, it was founded as a Benedectine monastery in 743, although the present two-towered church (or rather 1½-towered) dates from the mid-11th century. Inside its single-aisled interior, the raised presbytery has a 12th-century wooden cross and 15th-century choir of note. It also houses the Museo di Oggetti Sacri.
