Talamone, in the far south of the park, is the only real sightseeing port of call in the Maremma. While local legend attributes its foundation to Telamone, son of Eacus, who arrived here with the Argonauts, its history can more tangibly be traced back to the Etruscans. Fragments of their 150 BC terracotta sculptures have been found on the hill at Talamonccio, where the cursing of Oedipus in the war of the “Seven Against Thebes” was found depicted on the temple portico.
