The Serchio Valley begins with one of the area’s most photographed attractions: the Ponte del Diavolo (also known as the Ponte della Maddalena) at Borgo a Mozzano. This unusual 13th-century construction – a wide bridge whose five arches of differing sizes and heights peak drastically in the center – is the valley’s symbol and source of much history and intrigue. It has been attributed to Matilde di Canossa (around 1100),Natale Santi (about 500 years later), the famous Lucchese condottiere Castruccio Castracani and even to the Devil (hence the name). A local legend tells that the Devil aided in its construction in return for the soul of the first to cross it. Fortunately, St Giuliano, who made the deal, out-maneuvered the Devil by sending across a dog.
