Sculptor, painter and architect, Michelangelo excelled as all three. Active in both Florence and Rome, he gained his education in the former. His early works – two marble bas-reliefs, Madonna of the Stairs (c.1490) and Battle of the Centaurs (left, 1490-92) – are on display with the family’s collection at Casa Buonarroti Retrace your steps to Piazza San Marco and take a right along Via Cesare Battisti to arrive on Piazza SS. Annunziata. Its Renaissance arcades are animated by a lively student population year-round, but are at their best during the summer festival Firenze Estate, when the Piazza becomes the city’s main site for live jazz.
