The well-signposted SS208 takes you from Bibbiena to Chiusi della Verna. Found on the slopes of the 1,120-m (3,674-foot) Monte Penna in the midst of thick beech and fir woods, it is the gateway to one of Italy’s most important Christian centers: the Santuario della Verna. The Verna sanctuary, a quiet and majestic monastery on the Sacro Monte (Sacred Mountain), has been a site of pilgrimage since San Francesco d’Assisi received his stigmate in a nearby cave in 1224 (he had established the monastery 11 years earlier). The event is re-enacted every September. The oldest part of the complex is the Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli, which houses the first three (Annunciation, Nativity, Pietà) of a fine 16-strong collection of glazed della Robbia terracottas (see above) – the remaining works can be seen in the Basilica Maggiore, the Cappella delle Reliquie and the Cappella delle Stimmate, where Andrea della Robbia’s grandiose Crucifixion marks the spot where St Francis is said to have received the stigmate. Included in the area of the Parco Nazionale Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna (Casentinesi, Mt Falterona and Campigna National Park), the sanctuary is also well known for its stunning natural surroundings. The buildings look out onto a 300-m (984-foot) precipice, and the site includes the famous Sasso Spicco, a giant mass that seems suspended in the void below.
