The castle in Poppi is the most important of the Guidi Counts’ chain of medieval defenses in the Casentino – a land, which, due to its location at the northeastern edge of Tuscany, has seen much in the way of feudal conflict. The Guidi were lords of the land, and their castles can be found crowning the area’s most strategic locations: Romena, Porciano, Urbech, Castelleone, Castel San Niccolò, Borgo alla Collina, Montemignaio and Fronzola. Of these, the most interesting is the fortification in Castel San Niccolò. It once belonged to the Contessa Matilde di Toscana and has a church-museum covering the history of the castle, castle society and castles in the region. Another is the Castello di Romena, an imposing construction with 14 towers encircled by the remains of three rings of walls.
