The Fire Tower, is Hungary’s leaning Tower of Pizza. If you stand back a distance you can see that due to its clay soil, subsidence at the foundation has caused it to visibly lean northward. In 1893 a town fire watch functioned from its then two-story tower. But, when a new town hall was built in 1905, it created a problem. It blocked the view of the tower toward the south. A fire that could destroy the city might easily start unnoticed. So, conceding its necessity, the town fathers added two more floors to the fire tower. Now you know the “rest of the story.” No sentinel looks for flames today, but perhaps no one would want to in the leaning structure. Probably the added weight of the two extra floors caused it to lean.
