The Russian Gedächtniskirche St Alexei’s (Memorial Church) opened the same day as the monument to honor the 22,000 Russian soldiers as well as 16,000 Germans, 12,000 Austrians and 300 Swedish allies who died in the battle. It is a copy of the 16th-century Kolomenskoye Church of the Ascension near Moscow and used by the Russian Orthodox community. Of special note are the icon walls in the upper part of the church.
