Wolfsburg is 100 km (60 miles) east of Hanover on the busy highway and railroad to Berlin. It was founded in the 1930s to produce what would later be called the Beetle. The town is still completely dominated by Volkswagen, which has the largest motor manufacturing plant in Europe, producing 2,700 cars per day, in this town. The town is sometime also known as Golfsburg and it is said that being a car dealer here for Ford or Opel is the hardest job in Germany. Modern glass and steel pavilions for each of the Volkswagen family brands (including Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini) are set in a 70-acre park. Tours of parts of the factory are available. Around a thousand customers per day prefer to pick up their cars from the factory, thereby saving the delivery charges. Two glass towers house 400 cars each waiting to be picked up. The Swiss Mövenpick group has six restaurants in the park covering all price ranges, but for real elegance head to the Ritz Carlton.
