The Parisians are quite proud of their sewer system, originally designed by Napoleon III, with over 1,300 miles of tunnels named after the streets above them. Back in the old days there were boat tours of les égouts, but today’s visitors stay on solid ground. The tours consist of an audio-visual show on the history of the sewers, models of the machinery used, and a short walk along the, uh, open streams. These tours are perfect for anyone interested in modern urban waste treatment and “how things work.” Do they smell? Not as bad as you’d think, but don’t plan on eating right away.
