Golfo Dulce Lodge (pool, restaurant, full board) is a complex of intimate accommodations informally grouped together as a tiny village on the edge of the rainforest, about 250 meters/822 feet from the rocky gulf beach of Playa Josecito. It’s a 30-minute boat ride from either Golfito or Puerto Jiménez and is surrounded by the Piedras Blancas National Park. The property consists of more than 300 hectares/741 acres of virgin rainforest where the German biological program Profelis, a wildlife rehabilitation center, re-introduced margays (Leopardus weidii) and ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) into their natural habitat. They also work with Zoo Ave on a long-term project to develop a local self-sustaining scarlet macaw population. These beautiful birds were once plentiful before being decimated by pesticides and poaching. The lodge has five detached bungalows with covered porches in the deluxe category; plus, there are three standard furnished rooms. The on-site restaurant at this Swiss-owned establishment serves delicious European fare with a tropical twist. Lodging only runs between US $95 and US $105 per person, based on double occupancy. Packages with rainforest and botanical tours are US $325-355, per person. Three-night minimum.
