This private national wildlife refuge has cabins and organized tours. Hacienda Baru comprises 324 hectares/800 acres of varied micro-eco-systems that includes over 81 hectares/200 acres of untouched old-growth forest plus some 300 acres of secondary forest. The balance is in mangroves, swamp and plantation grounds. The mix attract plenty of wildlife. The refuge’s owner, Jack Ewing, sells a long species list of animals, birds and plants recorded here. It’s available in the information lodge. Cute cabins with red roofs house overnighters in rustic accommodations near the beach. The refuge’s staff offers a myriad trips, including a fabulous “Night in the Jungle” tour on horseback and foot. You’ll find petroglyphs of the pre-Columbian Brunca/Boruca peoples that once lived here, and the hacienda’s site yielded a rare, un-plundered Indian grave. The overnight trip allows you to look for octurnal rainforest wanderers. Located about two km/1. 25 miles north of the Dominical bridge. The clean gas station there makes a good restroom stop.
