Costa Verde (pool, restaurants, air, Internet). The signature phrase of this renowned hotel is “Still more monkeys than people”– and it’s accurate. Owner Allan Templeton, an ex-Peace Corps volunteer, is an environmental activist who built his property in a considered, responsible manner – and what he did build is impressive. Tall trees and forest on the hillside hotel property, which includes 74 hectares/30 acres left as a biological corridor, separate two, three-story buildings, each with an inviting cliffside pool. Inside the ambiance is Spanish colonial with bright fabrics and teak wood grown on their own plantation. The best rooms are the topfloor suites, with kitchenettes, but even the lowest-priced standard rooms are worthwhile. Hillside bungalows with views have been added to the property. The views of the park and ocean are breathtaking, and on our first day we encountered toucans, a sloth, plus tití and howler monkeys up close. Please don’t feed the monkeys that come at dusk. A10-minute walk from the beach. You can’t miss Costa Verde: across the road from the entrance is their tile-roof, La Cantina BBQ restaurant (with live music) and Internet café in an old railroad car. Up the road apiece is El Avion, one of the two C-123 cargo planes used to smuggle arms to the Contras in Nicaragua, now converted into a light meals eatery.
