Jinshanling board bus #980 from Dongzhimen to Miyun and then a minibus or taxi; threefour hrs). Seventy miles northeast of the city, the wall at Jinshanling is slightly less impressive than along the road at Simatai, but it also sees fewer visitors. Once you’ve made the 15-minute walk up to the wall, restored sections of Ming wall run in both directions, and this is the starting point for the arduous three- or four-hour hike to Simatai. The stretch here is open 24 hours and you can camp on the wall itself, which affords the opportunity to see both sunset and sunrise on the wall using the same ticket.
