Just five minutes drive from St George parish church, Gun Hill Signal Station is one of two remaining signal stations, built in 1818. Used to warn of approaching ships and slave rebellions, it stands at a height of 700 ft (233 m). The Barbados National Trust restored and landscaped Gun Hill in 1983. It now houses a collection of military memorabilia. Captain Henry Wilkinson carved the landmark coral stone lion, just below the signal station, in 1868, with the assistance of four military laborers. It stands seven feet/2.1 m tall.
