Built in 1953 to connect the Paznaun and Montafon valleys, the Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse offers an awe-inspiring look at western Austria’s high Alpine landscape. The 22-km road winds its way through rugged terrain above Galtür to Bielerhöhe and the Silvretta Reservoir, interesting for its blue glacial waters, boat tours, and hiking opportunities. The reservoir is dammed at both ends, and the Ill River sheds its waters toward both the Rhein and Danube rivers. Past the lake, the road labors down into the forested Montafon Valley toward Bregenz. Be prepared for a hefty toll (i10.90 at last count) and boulder-colored cows along (and in) the road. The pass closes for snow from November through May. Simple accommodations are available at the roadside-yet-remote Berggästhof Piz Buin.
